Twelfth Night is one of the famous comedy written by Shakespeare. The play starts by talking about a girl named Viola, who lost her brother on the sea and decided to disguise herself as a man (Cesario) and worked for Orsino. Even though she likes Orsino, she knows that her employer loves Olivia. While Cesario helps his employer to deliver the love letter to Olivia, Olivia falls for Cesario. While Orsino is pursuing Olivia, Olivia's uncle Toby introduced Sir Andrew Aguecheek to Olivia. The relationship between the characters starts to become sophisticated. There is a small incident which makes the relationship more complicated. Because Sir Toby, Maria, and Sir Andrew hates Olivia's steward Malvolio, who thinks himself is superior than any other servants, they wrote a fake love letter to Malvolio. Because of this, Malvolio wore the ugly yellow leggings in front of his master and tried to impress her. However, Olivia hated the color of yellow and thought that her steward was crazy and sent him to the darkroom. Besides this, Viola (Cesario)'s brother Sebastian arrived Illyria. . He was saved by a pirate named Antonio. Antonio soon became his friend and even lent him his purse. At the same time, Sir Andrew and Sir Toby found Cesario and tried to fight with him since he got Olivia's heart. While they are fighting, Antonio appeared on the stage. Because Viola looked like her brother Sebastian, Antonio thought his friend was involved in a fight so that he saved Cesario's life. When he asked for the purse, absolutely Cesario did not know about that. Antonio then thought that his friend betrayed him. But then he was caught by the guards, since he was the pirate who stole duke's ship. Later on Olivia met Sebastian and thought that he was Cesario. Then they fell in love. At the end, Orsino was impressed by Viola's behavior so they also fell in love with each other. Malvolio and Antonio was also freed at the end and it was a happy ending.
I think the author mainly focused on two themes: sexual identity and love. Take the main character Viola as an example. When she arrived Illyria, she became Cesario and that fooled everyone in the town. Because she dressed and behaved like a man, Olivia soon fell in love with her even though she was a woman. This also implies about the homosexual and heterosexual at that time period. At that time, I believed that homosexual was not allowed, but Shakespeare still depicted it by using his comedy. Also in the play, Olivia was more like a man instead of woman. She was more powerful, and was able to pick the one she loved. I think by writing about this, Shakespeare wanted to show the belief that men and women are equal. The love theme also occurs throughout the play. In the play, Viola loved Duke Orsino, Orsino loved Olivia, and Olivia loved Viola. This was like a love triangle. This triangle was broken because at the end Olivia fell in love with Viola's twin brother Sebastian. I think Shakespeare was trying to mock the noble's love. It was funny that Olivia at the end loves Sebastian just because he looks like Cesario. And it was funny that Olivia's steward tried to get Olivia's heart.
Talking about the staging of the play. When I was watching the play, it gave me a feeling that I was actually watching Black Panther. This was called Afrofuturism. It basically shows the African Diaspora culture with technology. In the play, when they were using the technology, they would first put a translucent projection screen between the audience and the stage. Then, they would project some light effect to highlight the feelings of characters or tried to build a certain atmosphere. Talking about the costumes, the costumes in the play are like the costumes in the Black Panther. I think the reason is that they there are all nobles. Especially when Olivia first showed up on the stage. When she first showed up, she wore a fancy noble dress with some extravagant ornaments. By using this kind of costumes, it easily built a image of Olivia that she was a noble, or a higher class. In the comparison, when we looked at Cesario's dress, he dressed like a servant. The color of his costume is simply and it only has the color of white. Because she was a female actor, in order to make her look like a man, she wore pants and that kind of shoes that other men wore. By wearing like this, audience would know that he is Cesario but not Viola. In the play, I think Sir Andrew and Duke Orsino is opposite. Even though they both are rich and love Olivia, Sir Andrew was more like a funny and crazy character while Duke Orsino was more like a noble-minded person. Audience can see it directly from their dressing. Sir Andrew's costume is purple, and his hair has certain color of green. He looks exactly like the joker in batman, who also wore purple pants and purple blazer, and also have green hair. In the comparison, Duke Orsino's dressing is more like a noble. It tells to the audience that even though they both are rich, Duke Orisno is more like a higher-class person.
My favorite character in the play is Sir Andrew. Firstly, he talks a lot of funny jokes. Also, because this is a comedy, his movement/behavior is exaggerate so it looks funny. The character actually create the figure of the joker. In the play he talks a lot of jokes that involves sexual innuendo and his behaviors are crazy, and he just likes a clown or joker.
I really love this play. I was amazed by the technology used in the play. I never thought that watching a play can give me a feeling that I am watching a movie. The sound effect and the light effect are fantastic in the play. By using the projector, it makes me thinking about the virtual reality. The singing in the play also utilizes the auto-tune. By using that, it makes Shakespeare's play more like a modern version. By watching this play, I learn that the staging and tech used can really makes a play enhance/upgrade to a new level.
