Our group is doing an adaptation of "Caroline's Wedding" from the story Krik Krak. And I am playing as one of the main characters Eric. The very first thing I did was to find the main themes of the story. Through reading and analyzing, I found out that there are three main themes in the story: Love between the main character Eric and Caroline, family struggle between Caroline and her mom, and the identity of all three characters. Next, I tried to present those themes out, in other words, how to construct the story. Then, as a group we come up a dinner scene(scene 2). During the dinner scene, it shows a close relationship between me and Caroline, so that it can highlight the love between them. However, Mom does not like Eric; she thinks Eric is not the right person for her daughter. While Mom is complaining about Caroline, it shows the start of the family struggle. Furthermore, Eric has a monologue. In the monologue, I talk about the hardness and failure Eric faced as a Bahamian. By doing that, it shows his own identity. Because his words was heard by mom, Mom then have another monologue. In her monologue, she mentions the experience as a Haitian, so that our story includes all characters' identity. After that, I tried to use blocking and staging to highlight those themes, emotions, and characteristics. For example, during Eric's monologue, I use the triangle to separate Eric and Mom. The triangle not only functions as a wall, but also functions as a separation between Eric and Mom. It will show that at this time Mom still did not accept Eric. Last, I am working on memorizing the lines. Memorizing lines is not a easy task, I also need to figure out the body movements that fit the lines. In the previous performance, it sound like I was reading the lines and it did not show any emotion in it. Therefore, the next performance I add some body movements. For example in the dinner scene, when mom did not allow me to call her "mom" and started to say that I am not the right person, I lowered my head in order to show that had a lowly status at that time. Also, in Eric's monologue I face to audience but not mom. This show that I am not only talking to mom, but also talking to myself. I am murmuring to myself that it is a fortune to meet Caroline; this emphasizes the love between Eric and Caroline.
