But Desiree is still waiting for Daniel. For those days, she does not eat, and does not change her dress. She even loses her red comb (the gift from the god) that represents her identity. That night Desiree dreamed. In the dream, Because Desiree saves his life, but Daniel betrays her, Agwe and Agwe incite her to use the knife to kill Daniel. When she wakes up she sees a knife gleaming outside of the window. As her rage raises, she takes the knife and goes into Daniel's room. But when she sees Daniel's face, she could not do it. When she tells her story to the vendors, vendors say that she is the one who suffers.

The hotel is getting busy, servants and staffs are preparing for the wedding. Everybody, including the peasants, are talking about the wedding. Everyone prays and congrats the bride and groom. Everyone is happy except for Desiree. She does not eat or rest for two weeks, and her body is weak. During the wedding day, peasants are having a feast outside of the hotel, the rich and guest are having it inside of the hotel. They drink, they eat, and they dance. Desiree is pushed by the crowds. Since her body is weak, she cannot move. When she sees Mathilde inside of the hotel, she shouts to her. When Madame Mathilde sees her, she sighs and walks away. Then she sees Daniel. When she shouts to Daniel, Daniel looks at her and gives her a glimpse. He ignores her. All of her sudden, she is desperate. She looks at herself: muddy feet, rugged dress, and the red comb is missing. Later on the policeman comes and tries to control the crowds. The drunk crowds are pushed away and Desiree falls down. She is being killed by the crowds. All of a sudden, the butterflies come from the hill, and flutter thickly over the body of the peasant girl lying on the road, and then they fly away. At last, Daniel's dad Gabriel asks the groundskeeper Lucifus to throw the corpse away.
