When Desiree awakes, she finds out that Daniel's godmother Mathilde is standing besides the bed. Then Desiree tells her that she were sent by the gods, but this makes the woman mad. When she asks Desiree to leave, Daniel stops her. Daniel tells her that she has given him hope and it is the first time he has slept an entire night and has awakened refreshed. Then, Daniel's father Gabriel comes in. When Gabriel wants Desiree to leave, this time Mathilde stops him. The woman tells her that they have tried everything, and why cannot they just trust Desiree this time. Then, Gabriel stalks from the room without once looking back. After days and days cure, Daniel is getting better and he is falling love with Desiree. While Desiree knows that her mission is completed after Daniel is cured, she still does not want to leave. Daniel asks Mathilde to make his mistress into a grand lady. Then, dressmakers were hired, and hair dressers, and shoemakers. Every girls are jealous at Desiree now. How did a poor, black peasant win the heart of Daniel Beauxhomme. They are saying that Andrea Galimar should be the one who be with Daniel. One night when Desiree is looking out of the window, she sees a man who stands in the shadows of the trees. He is Lucifus. This refers to me that Papa Ge is coming.
Chapter 13:
Daniel is waiting for a chance to amaze his father. When the day arrives, the grand balloon is prepared by the decorators, the floors are waxed to an incredible smoothness, all the patrons are invited and his father arrives. Then Desiree appears. She is beautiful with the white dress. Everybody is amazed by her and starts to praise her. However, when she smiles at Daniels father, Gabriel, he happens to be smiling in another. After that night, she becomes the princess in the hotel. Everyday she wears different dresses, and there is no more gossip. But then, Madame Mathilde reaches to her and asks her to leave. She tells her that peasants will never be married with the rich. They hate the peasants, and this is the curse of the Antilles, created by the enslavement of their fathers. This fears Desiree, and she starts to run away. In the garden she stops, and trying to search for a papillon. Suddenly, she sees Lucifus, then Lucifus notices that she is the peasant girl and then Papa Ge possesses him. Even though possessed, he found his arms shackled by Desiree's elegance. He dares not touch her. Desiree, then turns quickly to seize the papillon, but the butterflies all flies beyond reach.
Chapter 14:
Andrea Galimar returns from abroad. All of a sudden, Desiree starts to hear all the hints and gossip dropped by dressmakers and maids. She feels anxious and starts to cry out and ask Agwe and Erzulie to protect her. After a streak of lightning flashed across the clear sky, she feels comfortable. But the lightning also shows the squat man standing in the garden below. One day she asks Daniel that is it true that he and Andrea are promised to each other. Daniel tells her that it is the wishes of the old, but they are young people now, so they are no longer bound. After Daniel meets Andrea, he tells Desiree how perfect Andrea is, then Desiree thinks that she should share the joy that Daniel has. When Andrea finally comes to the hotel, Gabriel takes over the planning of the event, guests are invited but not Desiree. From the balcony Desiree sees Daniel and Andrea dancing as music being played. Her heart hurts. That night, Desiree is removed from the rooms of Daniel and put into a small room of her own at the far end of the hall.
