MLML Chapter 3-5

Chapter 3:
After Desiree heard the bang, she went there for a look. Later on she saw a broken car and a young man who got hurt. She tried to find someone else for help but she could not leave him alone. After she sang a song, peasants appeared. Desiree asked Tonton Julian to bring him home. Desiree thought that this young man was the will of the Gods. M. Bienaime came and saw the young man and said that he was definitely a creole boy but he did not know he is. Then they decided to let M. Julian travel to the big cities and towns in the direction that the hurt man had been heading. While they were talking outside of the hut, Desiree was in the hut looking after the young man. She thought that the goddess Erzulie (the Haitian African spirit of love, beauty, jewelry, dancing, luxury, and flowers) had asked this of her, and Agwe had demanded it.

Chapter 4:
Six days pass and peasants are waiting for M. Bienaime and M. Julian to come back. Desiree are carefully looking after her patient. Her devotion raised the fears of Mama Euralie. Mama Euralie afraids that one day Desiree will leave them. One day when Desiree goes back to the room, she finds out that the man opens his eyes. Even though his eyes are open, he still cannot speak. Then, a terrible storm raids the village. Many things are gone. Mama Euralie then curses the Gods that she believes. She is desperate and wants to know why the Gods do such things to her (storm, husband). Even though she is desperate, she holds the young man hard and tells him that she will protect him: "I'll protect you. I'll do battle, if battle need be done - with the gods, even with my own Agwe, to keep you alive." Night came. When everyone falls asleep, Desiree is still looking after her patient. Then, Desiree sees a demon. In order to save the young man's life, she prayed to the Gods, to Agwe, to Erzulie, that she will even give her soul for the life and happiness of her love. After that, the demon fades.

Chapter 5:
One day, a helicopter arrives the village. A rich man comes down to the village and claims that he is the patient's father - M. Beauxhomme. He claims that Tonton Julian gives him the direction so that he can find the village. Then he gives about 1 dollar to Mama Euralie as the gratitude. The helicopter breaks Desiree's heart. She thinks this is the punishment from the Gods, as she holds him back from the evil. Later, Tonton Julian returns. He tells the journey to the peasants and describes M. Beauxhomme as an rich and arrogant jerk. Even though he only gives him five gourdes (about 1 dollar), Mama Euralie comforts him that they can uses this money to buy seeds, so that their land will be rich. When they are talking, Desiree is still forlorn and unhappy.

MLML first two chapters

Chap 1:
Setting is on an island named Jewel of the Antilles. There are two sides on this island - the poor and the rich. While the rich can use their high-advanced techniques or wealthy to "protect" the town, the poor can only pray to the Gods. Two main Gods are Asaka, goddess of earth, of plants, of all growing things, and Agwe, god of the sea, of water.
Characters are Ti Moune (Desiree Dieu-Donne), a little girl who desires to meet the outside world; her guardians Tonton Julian and Mama Euralie.
In chapter one it gives a basic background of the island, the people, and the situation. Ti Moune and her guardians are all peasants, the poor. Right now they are suffering in a drought. Tonton Julian thinks that Gods are punishing them because men cutting the trees and selling them for gain. He thinks that Gods are punishing them because of the greed. The most important thing for them is to pray to the Gods and beg for rain. While they are baffled, Ti Moune thinks about the car, that shining car M. Galimar own. She thinks that one day she will leave this place and go to the outside world.
Chap 2:
When everybody go to the ceremony for rest, Ti Moune go to the brook where peasants are forbidden. Then she lies in the brook and thinks about her life. When she was four, her mom abandoned her and put her on a mango tree. Later on Tonton Julian and Mama Euralie found her and treated her as their own child. Even though Ti Moune loves her guardian, she still wants to go and see the outside world. When she gets up and puts on her dress, the dress rips. Then she saw a giant star had fallen and heard the car crashed. This gives a foreshadowing of the story, but also shows that her will is huge, so that her peasant dress does not fit her.
