Blog (MLML's gods)

There are mainly four gods in MLML, Agwe, Asaka, Papa Ge, and Erzulie. Agwe is the god of the sea; Asaka is the goddess of earth, of plants, of all growing things; Erzulie is the goddess of love, family; Papa Ge is the god of death. Unlike other three gods who stay in the sky, Papa Ge usually travels around the people.
Talking about Agwe, the god of the sea, he is an arrogant, irritable god. From the text (chapter 1 pg12), M. Bienconnu says that: "Agwe, your god of waters- how he punishes her(Asaka)." From here, we can analyze that he is a god who has a lot of power, and the one who punishes people through droughts, storms, etc. Also from Chapter 7(pg 73), when he notices that Erzulie, goddess of love and family, breaks his plan, he is angry and furious: "'How dare you!' The voice of a young man - brash-sounding, arrogant, yet as fresh as a gale of wind - had come from the lips of an old woman." From here we know that he is arrogant. Furthermore, at page 75 (chapter 7) Agwe tells Erzulie that he will destroy all the peasants. By destroying all the peasants, he can achieve a world where there are no bodies left for the love he tries to project. But at the same time, it will hurt Asaka, his lover. From here we can sense that Agwe is also a selfish god. For the dressing, he should wear a long blue gown. Blue represents color of the water. The gown represents that he is powerful, like a noble. He should sounds more arrogant, and talking like a king or a noble. On the stage, he should hold a trident to represent the power of water. Or the pattern of trident can represent him as well. Sometimes on the stage, his voice could follow with the lightning, so that he sounds more powerful.
Asaka is one of Agwe's lover. In chapter 1 (page 11), Monsieur Bieconnu says that: "We peasants worshipped her. Our praise of her rang through the valleys, up through the hills, and on to the mountaintops... Asaka smiled and we laughed with joy." From here we know that Asaka is beloved by peasants. People are like the spoiled children of Asaka. People build towns and lumber on Asaka's body while hurting Asaka. In my opinion, Asaka should be a middle aged woman. Her clothing should have the color of green, representing nature. She should talk softly, showing how nice she is to others. On the stage she should stand behind or besides Agwe, showing that he is protected by Agwe.
Erzulie, she is the goddess of love and family, also the lover of Agwe. In the book she helps Desiree a lot. She helps Desiree to achieve her dream. Because of that, she made Agwe angry. " Here you are, set - for whatever purpose - to undo plans that I have made!. Who gave you the right to make a sham of promises sworn? I shall not be compromised. Do you hear!" (Chapter 7 pg 73) From Agwe's word, we sense that at this point Erzulie stands at the opposite side of Agwe. Erzulie should be a young and beautiful girl. She should wear pink or red clothing to show the symbol of love from Desiree and Daniel. On the stage she should stands at the opposite side of Agwe. On her hands she could hold Cupid's Arrow to show the symbol of love.
Papa Ge is the god of the death. In chapter four (pg 46) Desiree depicts him as a demon: "Not a man - a demon! His mouth gleamed red, blood red. He grinned around a cigar clenched between brown teeth that were dripping with blood." From here we know that he is a demon-like creature. The only will he has is to take one's life. In chapter four he is coming for Daniel but Desiree protects him. He should wear a black cloak and holding reaper's scythe on the stage. Also, on the stage he could wear several different masks, to show that Papa Ge is actually around the people but not like other three gods. He is really tall and stooped so that he looks more like an animal instead of a person.
